Jeju Island Artist Collective “Smallish 小さめ”

展覧会「Smallish」に出品された作品はサイズこそ小さいものの、その意味や内容は決して小さくありません。本展における作品群は、大きな作品のためのリサーチやスタディ、あるいはモデルのような補助的な存在ではなく、「小さい」というスケールそのものに作家の意図が込められた、完結した表現として存在しています。豊かな文化的背景、精緻なフォルム、そして情緒的な力を兼ね備えたこれらの作品は、簡潔でありながら非常に具体的です。

ドローイング、彫刻、絵画、キネティックアート、アニメーション、映像、写真など、さまざまなメディアを通じて、観客は遠くからやって来たアーティストたちと、身近な場所にいるアーティストたちが、それぞれの視覚言語と固有の語彙を用いて、多彩で鮮やかな対話を交わす様子に出会うことができるでしょう。

「Smallish」は、Jeju Island Artist Collective（済州島アーティスト・コレクティブ）によって企画されました。Jeju Island Artist Collectiveは、2020年にニューヨークを拠点とする韓国人アーティスト、キム・ギョンジン、キム・ヨンジン、チェ・ウンサンによって設立されました。2021年にはニューヨーク・クイーンズのBliss on Bliss Art Projectsにて「Survival Tool for the Age of Ultra Anxiety」というポップアップ展を開催し、2024年にはマシュー・ギャリソンがキュレーションした「Parallels and Rupture」展に参加。また、ニューヨークのFlux Factoryとともに、パンデミックに向き合う 「Radical Self Care For the Age of Ultra Anxiety」展を企画・キュレーションしました。

 

 

전시 “Smallish”의 작업들의 크기는 작지만 그것들의 의미나 내용은 작지 않다. 그래서 이 전시의 작품들은 더 큰 작품을 위한 연구, 스터디나 모델같은 소품이 아니라 작은 그 자체로 작가가 표현하고자 하는 것을 온전히 담고 있다. 풍부한 문화적 문맥, 형식적인 정교함, 그리고 정서적인 힘을 가진 이 전시의 작품들은 간결하면서도 구체적이다. 드로잉, 조각, 회화, 키네틱, 애니메이션, 비디오, 사진 등의 작품을 통해 관객들은 먼 곳에서 온 작가들과 가까운 곳의 작가들이 다채로운 시각 언어와 그 들만의 은어로 형형색색의 대화를 나누는 모습을 볼 수 있을 것이다.

“Smallish” 는 제주 아일랜드 아티스트 콜렉티브 Jeju Island Artist Collective가 기획하였다. Jeju Island Artist Collective는 2020년 뉴욕 기반 한국 작가 김경진, 김연진, 최은선에 의해 만들어졌으며 2021년 뉴욕 퀸즈에 있는 Bliss on Bliss Art Projects에서 “Survival Tool for the Age of Ultra Anxiety” 팝업 전시를 하였고. 2024년에는 Matthew Garrison이 큐레이팅한 “Parelles and Rupture” 전시에 참여하였다. 또한 뉴욕의 Flux Factory와 함께  “Radical Self Care For the Age of Ultra Anxiety” 전시를 기획, 큐레이팅 하였다.

 

Jeju Island Artist Collective and Gallery Ondo are excited to present an exhibition titled “Smallish” featuring works from twenty four artists based in Japan, Korea and the U.S.

Small in size but not in content, the works are not studies, models or prototypes for larger pieces, but fully developed and realized works. Rich in cultural association, formal sophistication and emotive power, these works compel through brevity and specificity. They include drawing, sculpture, painting, printmaking, kinetics, robotics, animation and video. The exhibition constitutes a multivalent conversation between artists from near and far employing a range of visual and expressive languages and lingo.

Jeju Island Artist Collective was formed in 2020 and has produced an exhibition and performance of their collaborative works at “Bliss on Bliss Art Projects“ in Queens, New York in 2021.

In 2024 the Collective was included in a large, ambitious exhibition,  “Parallels and Rupture”,  curated by Matthew Garrison at the Freedman Gallery, Albright College in Reading, PA.

As curators, Jeju Island organized a 28 artist exhibition in 2021 at the Flux Factory, NYC, titled “Survival Tactics For the Age of Ultra Anxiety” in response to the Covid pandemic.
